The Raven
The raven landed softly on a fence post along the side of a road and eyed the people passing this and that way in their cars and wondered at what manner of species needed to transport themselves so quickly and in such strange a conveyance. The noise and smell of these monsters never ceased to amaze the raven and he spent many hours often gazing from his fence post at the people within the monsters who never gave him so much as a wave. To them he seemed to be invisible and yet he was a raven!
Then the raven noticed some crows playing along the roads edge. Crows were natures chancers and could be relied upon for a brief moments entertainment. The raven watched as they squawked excitedly to each other and dodged expertly in and out of the monsters trying to clear the remains of a rabbit who had not been so lucky in his attempts to cross. Ravens did not conspire with mere crows in social intercourse, preferring to only acknowledge each others presence and naturally a Raven had due precedence at the site of carrion with the crows showing due homage and backing down usually with good grace. If not then a swift clout from a ravens mighty beak would teach a crow some manners. In this case the Raven was not interested in a dead rabbit and merely sat and watched the crows antics.
The raven eventually bored with the site and took off climbing high into the sky to hover just underneath the clouds. Here he glided on warm upward thermals while watching the wound in the countryside that was the carriage way upon which the monsters usually thundered along. However, this time the Monsters stretched for miles and were stationery bunched nose to tail. Why did the monsters have to stay to the black path? could the creatures within not venture out of the monsters the raven mused. He had seen them venture forth before on large flat square areas with many places to feed around them usually sited just off the black path the monsters followed. The Raven liked these places and would go there now for his lunch.
The raven flew over the monsters below and following the wound in the countryside upon which sat the idle monsters until he reached the flat area where the food places were placed around the square upon which the the stationary monsters seemed to rest. He landed perfectly on the grass next to one such feeding place and slowly looked around. The raven noted many creatures had left their monsters and were heading this way and that around the square. He was used now to the fact that no matter how many times he called they just ignored him. So, he wondered over to the nearest feeding place and with deft strokes of his powerful beak opened up various containers until he found the one that he seeked. He loved the dark meat and would discard the sweet mush that surrounded the tasty morsel. Once satisfied the raven jumped up upon the food collection thing and looked around. Many of the creatures were heading here and there, many with food parcels of their own. The raven could never work out why they discarded so much of it. Indeed he had once found a massive hole three times bigger than any monster square full of food that was the territory of many seagulls who had chased him off.
the raven now full tired quickly of the creatures who ignored him and decided to head back to the ground he loved and where he had grown up. Away from the wound in the ground and the monsters with their creatures within going it seemed nowhere today. Onward he flew to the copse of trees upon the escarpment where he was known and respected for what he was. "these creatures are strange ones" he mused "what manner of thing throw food away and needs monsters to move around" As he landed and smoothed his slick feathers he thought "And there is so many of them are they all blind why can they not see me, for I am a Raven".
